New Itron OpenWay Riva ‘Smart’ Meters Combine RF Mesh, PLC and Wi-Fi Communications and Poll Data Once per Second

There are several concerns with this new ‘smart’ meter. First, the Itron representative made mention that the new meter polls data once per second. The frequency of this data collection would enable the ultimate in consumer privacy invasions in that the more frequent the data collection, the more precise one can analyze exactly what is going on inside the home.

‘Catastrophic’ Failures Expected with ‘Smart’ Meters

‘Smart’ Meters are expected to occasionally fail catastrophically while analog meters do not have that failure mode.  This was the information presented by an industry representative at a recent conference sponsored by the Edison Electric Institute (EEI).

Congressional Testimony: ‘Smart’ meters only have a life of 5 to 7 years

“These devices are now computers, and so they have to be maintained.  They don’t have the life of an [electromechanical] meter which is 20 to 30 years.  These devices have a life of between 5 to 7 years..."

T-Mobile wants to turn your house into a cell tower, and why you should think twice about letting them

T-Mobile has begun giving out miniature cell towers to customers in an attempt to create little hotspots of LTE where the carrier's network is weak or nonexistent. The devices, which cost little more than a $25 refundable deposit, are being promoted to homes and small businesses and can connect any T-Mobile customer's smartphone to mobile data, including 3G and 4G. The company says they can cover a range of 3,000 square feet.

Study shows radioprotective effects of a natural leaf extract

The present study has investigated the effects of mobile phone electromagnetic radiation (EMR) on fertility in rats. The purpose of this study was to explore the capability of polyphenolic-rich Moringa oleifera leaf extract in protecting rat testis against EMR-induced impairments based on evaluation of sperm count, viability, motility, sperm cell morphology, anti-oxidants (SOD & CAT), oxidative stress marker, testis tissue histopathology and PCNA immunohistochemistry.

Practical Tips to Reduce Electromagnetic Radiation Exposure

Our modern lives are full of technology that emits electromagnetic radiation. We don’t know is how this radiation is going to affect our health 20 years. Author, researcher, and expert on electromagnetic health issues, Camilla Rees talks about some of what we do know now that is concerning and what steps we can take to reduce our exposure.

An Inside View of a "Smart" Meter

This paper presents evidence based on manufacturer specifications and field measurement that the switching frequency of a smart meter switch-mode power supply is about 130 kHz. Further, that this creates a harmonic-rich signal that is readily induced in the hot legs of a 100-amp residential service entrance. Evidence from field measurement is also presented showing that this harmonic-rich switching frequency is radiated from the meter. Studies are coming out that show these frequencies, sometimes called intermediate frequencies, from common devices can do biological harm, especially if there is direct contact between ones body and the device.

Should babies and toddlers use mobile devices every day?

This likely isn’t a surprise to anyone who has been paying attention to the world around them, but a study just published in the journal Pediatrics shows that 44% of children under the age of 1 use mobile devices every day. By the age of 2, that jumps to 77%. By age 4, half of the children in the study had their own TV — and three-quarters had their own mobile device. And these weren’t rich kids, either; the study was done at an urban, low-income practice in Philadelphia.
