(NaturalNews) Nearly 8 million people worldwide die from cancer on an annual basis. Cardiovascular disease is the number one cause of death, killing almost 17 million people in 2011; both of these statistics are spiraling out of control. Wisconsin smart meter opt-out measure stalls while bill that loosens utilities' liability gains traction

"Smart" Meters
A bill that would allow Wisconsin utility customers to decline or “opt-out” from using new high-tech smart meters is failing to gain traction as another bill that would weaken liability laws for those same utilities is gaining momentum in the state legislature. In mid-July, Rep. Jeremy Thiesfeldt, R- Fond du Lac, began seeking endorsements for a bill that would create a statewide opt-out program for utility customers of all kinds – water, electric or gas – who wish to keep their analog meters. Thiesfeldt said that while some utility customers believe there are health risks associated with the so-called smart meters, which use radio frequency waves to transit information in a similar manner to a cellphone or Wi-Fi computer network, his bill was introduced to address privacy concerns. Smart Meters Safety Questioned After Fires

Smart meters are the newest technology being used by power companies as a means to save money and energy, but concerns are mounting about their safety. So far, there are claims that hundreds of fires have been linked to the “smarter” versions of meters that allow utility companies to wirelessly monitor household electric usage. While smart meters are still relatively new in Kosciusko County, a fire in Leesburg early Monday morning is a reason to have concern. North Webster Fire Department Chief Jeremy Likens
said the fire at 36 EMS T14 Lane, Leesburg, “definitely started in the new meter. We’ll do more investigating on it today, but it definitely was in the meter.”Texas Lt. Gov Dewhurst enters battle against smart meters

At least one group of Texans celebrated after an influential political figure reached out to help in their battle against smart meters last week. In a letter dated Sept. 25, Lt. Gov. David Dewhurst directed the Texas Senate Committee on Business and Commerce to conduct a study of possible harmful effects on health stemming from the installation of smart electric meters. He added that, if necessary, an independent study should be commissioned to resolve the concerns. Rhode Island Commissioner Tries to Slow Smart Meter Deployment

Although Rhode Island has a smart meter pilot program on Aquidneck Island, there are currently no plans to expand the meters in the state. Rhode Island’s Public Utilities Commissioner Paul J. Roberti doesn’t believe smart meters “come close” to justifying their costs and are an ill-advised, unrealistic attempt to modify consumer behavior. Opponents voice concerns over Maine smart meters

AUGUSTA, Maine (AP) — Opponents of smart meters installed by electricity companies said Wednesday the technology can lead to headaches and more serious health issues and urged the state to allow Maine residents to opt out of installing the technology without having to pay a fee. Maine's Public Utilities Commission held a public hearing at the University of Maine at Augusta as part of an ongoing investigation into health risks of the radiofrequency radiation used in the more than 600,000 smart meters throughout the state that wirelessly send electricity use information to Central Maine Power. Maine is taking the closest known look into the health impact of the meters of any other state or commission, said Commissioner David Littell. Take Back Your Power Documentary

"Smart" Meters
In my business, the number one complaint I hear from my customers is smart meters. Not just from Wisconsin, but from all over North America. Headaches, dizziness, "brain fog," sleeping problems, trouble concentrating, chronic pain, heart palpitations, and ringing in the ears are some of the most common complaints I hear. Many people had no idea a "smart meter" was placed on their house, and then only after suffering months and months or in some cases years, they found out they had a smart meter and that it was placed on their house the same time the symptoms started. Landis Gyr, a major smart meter manufacturer that describes itself as a "world leader" in smart grid technology, let the cat out of the bag that the National Security Agency (NSA), which we now know actively spies on innocent Americans' phone calls and text messages, also uses smart meters to spy on Americans. Thanks to a NaturalNews reader tip, we learned that Landis Gyr recently had a company voicemail message that admitted smart meter technology is part of the NSA's "PRISM" spying and surveillance program.
